Downfall of Humanity

So in an attempt to not sound super negative, I waited till Wednesday to post this. Actually, I don't really care if I sound negative or not.

So lately I have not had too much confidence in man kind as a whole. Nothing really in particular, but certain recent events have just pushed me over the edge. Take for example all of the outcry for aid to Haiti. Very noble cause to help humanity, very poorly executed by humanity.

So we take a bunch of MULTI-millionaire celebrities, give them (thats right, GIVE them) $10,000 dollar suites, take up massively expensive air time, organize a huge glamorous concert with all the bells and whistles, and then ask for a $10 dollar donation from all of us humble middle and lower class citizens who constantly have our eyes glued to the TV screens. Sounds perfect huh?

Not exactly. Why don't the celebrities just donate the cost of the concert instead? and shut the hell up about it? Wouldn't that be a lot more effective in helping the people of Haiti? Certainly, but no one actually cares about Haiti, they just care about themselves and there image in the public eye. All they want is to LOOK like they care....

This brings me to my 2nd point: TV series. Are you kidding me? I know people who CANCEL plans with actual real life friends so that they can watch 22 minutes of filmed, scripted, acted out life. ??? Does that make sense to you? I mean dont get me wrong, I watch TV. I watch Sportscenter almost every morning. BUT it's REAL. Actual information that can benefit my life. I watch news, and the weather channel, and live sports. Stuff that at least somewhat matters and can affect my life. I know for a fact that no ones life has ACTUALLY benefited from watching LOST or Glee or any other crap mini-series habitually.

Any who, I will end my rant for now. After all, humanity did invent coffee, which is awesome.

  1. Andy, you are missing the point of a television series. Television series have different purposes for different people. One may watch for pure entertainment, while one may watch to question their own beliefs or lifestyle, another may watch to expand their creativity. You, for one believe that television series are a complete waste of time and elude people of their own truths. In fact, you may be correct, television series could be a reason why Americans are fat (as a country), and why our current youth's social skills are diminishing. I will agree with your opinion partly, but you must realize that these television shows play different roles in other people's lives.

  2. TO an extent I agree. But after surveying most of the kids in my classes, these shows provide some sort of escape from reality or altered sense of being, much like drugs and alcohol....If an alcoholic and someone who watches a lot of tv were to describe their lifestyles they would be eerily similar. "I do it to feel good, to escape from reality, I do it to live a different life etc etc etc"

  3. Doubtful, when an alcoholic, or drug addict, even the recreational drinker/drug user takes part in their activity, there are chemical reactions, or synapses that occur in the brain. Unless you are truly addicted to a TV show (highly unlikely), you will never achieve chemical synapse in the way that an addict does. You will never feel the same way, or have the same affect from a TV show that you would if you were drinking/using drugs. People who say that they watch TV because it's like alcohol/drugs are liars, and sinners.
